Itinerary

DAY 1 | HUARAZ

Begin the tour arriving at the city of Huaraz, starting point to some of the most impressive walks in the country and beautiful Andean landscapes that include snow-capped peaks and turquoise lagoons. Take advantage of the afternoon at leisure to rest or explore the surroundings.

Overnight at the selected hotel in Huaraz.

DAY 2 | HUAYLAS ALLEY & LLANGANUCO LAGOON

Today you will explore the impressive Callejón de Huaylas (Huaylas Alley), a valley between the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Negra (Black Range), crossed by the Santa River.

You will visit the picturesque villages of Carhuaz, Mancos and Yungay as you head into the Cordillera Blanca. You will discover the imposing walls of the Huandoy (6,395 m.a.s.l.) and Huascarán (6,768 m.a.s.l.), snow-capped peaks, which frame the turquoise lagoons of Llanganuco in the Huascarán National Reserve.

You will walk among the queñual and quishuar forests near the Orcocha and Chinacocha (3,850 m.a.s.l.) lagoons, before ascending to the Portachuelo de Llanganuco (4,768 m.a.s.l.), from where you will admire the spectacular glacial cirque of the Huandoy, Pisco, Chacraraju, Yanapaccha, Chopicallqui and Huascarán snow-capped peaks. After a snack, you will return to Huaraz after a day full of adventure and natural beauty.

Overnight at the selected hotel in Huaraz. Breakfast Included. Lunch included.

DAY 3 | PASTORURI MOUNTAIN

Leaving from Huaraz (3100 m.a.s.l.) we will go through the south of the Santa River valley, passing through the typical towns of Recuay, Ticapampa and Catac; from there we will go to the Pachacoto ravine, a natural area protected by the Huascarán National Park where the mountain landscape is characterized by the “ichu”, typical vegetation of the “puna” or Andean plateau; where you can find the sparkling water springs of “Pumapampa” and the “Pumapashimin” water spring of varied color surrounded by cattails.

In this region is the largest concentration of stands of “Puya Raimondi“, an exotic specimen of the high Andean flora that reaches between 8 to 12 meters high and has the largest inflorescence of the plant kingdom reaching between 8,000 to 15,000 flowers, which produce millions of seeds. The Puya is the habitat of a diversity of Andean fauna, especially the giant hummingbird, as well as a series of rodents that shelter from predators among the thorny leaves of the puya.

This region is also the habitat of the vicuña, the South American camelid highly prized for its fine wool.

On our way, we will appreciate the Mururaju (5,688 m.a.s.l.), Huarapasca (5,418 m.a.s.l.) and Tucu (5,300 m.a.s.l.) snow-capped peaks among others as we approach the roadhead (4,850 m.a.s.l.) from where we will begin our hike to the glacier edge of Pastoruri (5,200 m.a.s.l.).

During our hike we will observe the glacial environment and the effects of climate change in the mountains, as well as fossil remains of past geological eras such as ferns and small mollusks. On our tour of the “climate change route”, our guide will orient us on the glacial environment. Transfer to Huaraz.

Overnight at the selected hotel in Huaraz. Breakfast included.

FAQs

Are permits required for the Salkantay Trek?

No specific permits are required for the Salkantay Trek itself, but a permit to enter Machu Picchu is needed if the trek concludes there. Most trekkers book through a tour operator who handles permits and logistics.

Can I do the Salkantay Trek independently?

While it is possible to trek independently, many opt for guided tours to ensure safety, navigation, and support. Guided tours also handle logistics such as permits, transportation, and meals.

What is the best time to do the Salkantay Trek?

The best time to trek is during the dry season, from May to September, when weather conditions are more stable. The trek can be done year-round, but conditions can be wet and challenging during the rainy season (October to April).

Do I need travel insurance?

Travel Insurance Travel insurance is compulsory in order to participate on any of our trips. When selecting a travel insurance policy please bear in mind that all clients must have medical coverage and that we require a minimum coverage of USD 200,000 for repatriation and emergency rescue. We strongly recommend that the policy also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects. If you have credit card insurance we require proof of purchase of the trip’s receipt of credit card statements with a credit card in your name. Contact your bank for details of their participating insurer, the level of coverage and emergency contact telephone number.

How difficult is the Salkantay Trek?

The trek is considered moderate to challenging due to the high altitude and varying terrain. Proper acclimatization and a reasonable level of fitness are recommended.

What should I bring on the Salkantay Trek?

Bring comfortable hiking boots, warm clothing (layers), a rain jacket, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a sleeping bag, a headlamp, and a reusable water bottle. Trekking poles can also be helpful.

Is the Salkantay Trek suitable for beginners?

The trek is suitable for those with a basic level of fitness and hiking experience. Beginners should prepare for the physical demands and high altitude by training and acclimatizing properly.
