Experience at a glance

Embark on a three-day journey through Peru’s southern highlands, traveling from Cusco to Puno while taking in breathtaking landscapes and exploring charming villages, fascinating museums, historic churches, and ancient Inca temples. Experience the vibrant cultural heritage that thrives in the communities surrounding Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake, where traditions remain alive and deeply rooted to this day.

Highlights

Titicaca Lake: It is the highest navigable lake in the world and its islands are home to several communities where the indigenous community lives on man-made islands crafted from woven totora reeds, using the same material to build their homes and maintain their unique lifestyle.

Andahuaylillas: A unique opportunity to enter a work of art in the heart of the Peruvian Andes. Visit the San Pedro Apostol Church, also called the “Sistine Chapel of America” for its Renaissance-Baroque style and the fascinating frescoes that decorate its entire interior.

Racchi: This archaeological site preserves part of the Wiracocha temple, an impressive construction that, they say, had the highest roof in the entire empire. In the place, there are also stores, rooms and “Inca baths” with permanent water supply.

Taquile Island: Sail to Taquile Island, once part of the Inca Empire, where you’ll explore ancient ruins, experience local traditions through a cultural demonstration, and enjoy lunch before returning to Puno.

La Raya: La Raya marks the highest point of the journey between Puno and Cusco, standing at an awe-inspiring altitude of 4,313 meters above sea level.

Itinerary

DAY 1 | CUSCO - PUNO

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the hotel in Cusco then transfer to the bus station to start your journey through the impressive landscape of the Andes to Puno.

Your first stop of the day is in Andahuaylillas, a town located around 40 kilometres away from Cusco. The main attraction here is the local Church, known as the “Sistine Chapel of America” owing to the high quality of art found inside.

Continue the journey to Racchi, home to the Wiracocha Temple, a striking rectangular structure measuring 30 metres wide and 20 metres high. Lunch will be taken in the town of Sicuani before you head to La Raya, the highest point of the trip between Puno and Cusco, at the dizzying altitude of 4,313 metres above sea level.

The next stop is the town of Pucara, the first urban settlement on Lake Titicaca, established between 100 and 300 A.D. Visit some of the monoliths from the town’s pre-Inca site at the Pucara Lithic Museum before completing the final part of the journey to Puno. Once in the city, a representative will check you in to your hotel.

Overnight at selected hotel in Puno. Breakfast and lunch included.

DAY 2 | PUNO / LAKE TITICACA: UROS AND TAQUILE

After breakfast at the hotel, travel to the port of Puno where a boat will be waiting to take you to the beautiful Uros Islands. The Uros are an indigenous people of Peru that live on a series of human-made islands, created entirely from the buoyant totora reeds that grow abundantly in the shallows of the lake.

After visiting this fascinating island, sail to Taquile, a small slice of heaven that once belonged to the Inca Empire. Look around and notice traces of its Incan past in the ruins that still exist around the island. After a brief introduction, the local community will give you an insight into their customs and traditions with a cultural demonstration. Lunch is enjoyed on the island before the return trip to Puno.

Overnight at selected hotel in Puno. Breakfast and lunch included.

DAY 3 | DEPARTURE PUNO

During the morning, you will be transferred to Puno’s airport for your departure flight.

FAQs

Are permits required for the Salkantay Trek?

No specific permits are required for the Salkantay Trek itself, but a permit to enter Machu Picchu is needed if the trek concludes there. Most trekkers book through a tour operator who handles permits and logistics.

Can I do the Salkantay Trek independently?

While it is possible to trek independently, many opt for guided tours to ensure safety, navigation, and support. Guided tours also handle logistics such as permits, transportation, and meals.

What is the best time to do the Salkantay Trek?

The best time to trek is during the dry season, from May to September, when weather conditions are more stable. The trek can be done year-round, but conditions can be wet and challenging during the rainy season (October to April).

Do I need travel insurance?

Travel Insurance Travel insurance is compulsory in order to participate on any of our trips. When selecting a travel insurance policy please bear in mind that all clients must have medical coverage and that we require a minimum coverage of USD 200,000 for repatriation and emergency rescue. We strongly recommend that the policy also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects. If you have credit card insurance we require proof of purchase of the trip’s receipt of credit card statements with a credit card in your name. Contact your bank for details of their participating insurer, the level of coverage and emergency contact telephone number.
