Start with the Larco Museum, located in the traditional Pueblo Libre district, which is housed in a beautifully restored viceregal mansion built on a pre-Columbian pyramid. The museum boasts the world’s most complete pre-Hispanic collection of gold and silver objects, as well as pieces of erotic art.

Then visit Casa Aliaga, a colonial mansion. Continue to a scenic tour in the colonial downtown. Here you can appreciate the grandiose architecture of the Spanish Empire and be amazed by Lima´s Cathedral. Erected in the 16th century, this building took more than 80 years to complete. After the tour, you’ll be transferred back to the hotel.

Overnight at the selected hotel in Lima. Breakfast included.

DAY 3 | LIMA – CUSCO / CITY TOUR AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES

You will be transferred to the airport to take the flight to Cusco  (it is suggested to book a flight arriving before 11hrs)

At arrival in the city you will be transferred to the selected hotel. In the afternoon, enjoy a guided tour of the former capital of the Inca Empire. The tour starts with a visit to Santo Domingo Convent, a large Renaissance-baroque complex, which was built over the Inca Coricancha temple.

Then, visit the Cathedral, the most imposing monument of the Main Square. Head to the hills above Cusco to visit the remains of the fortress of Sacsayhuamán, whose impressive ramparts offer a stunning panoramic view of Cusco, and the ruins of the temple and amphitheater of Qenqo.

Finally visit Puka Pukara (‘Red fortress’ in Quechua) an Inca military complex located on a prominent hill. Its dwellings, squares, bathrooms, aqueducts, walls, and towers can still be appreciated. Afterwards, return to your hotel.

DAY 4 | CUSCO – MARAS & MORAY – SACRED VALLEY

Deart after breakfast at the hotel, heading along the Sacred Valley towards the archaeological site of Moray, approximately an hour and a half away.

Continue to Maras, where the salt ponds create a dazzling scene. During Inca times, the salt deposits were an important economic centre and of great value to the imperial economy. After the tour, transfer to your hotel in the Sacred Valley.

*During December to March (rainy season), Chinchero, the town of Maras and chicherias, is visited instead of the salt mines. In these months, you have the option of replacing this tour with a visit to South Valley.

Overnight at the selected hotel in Sacred Valley. Breakfast included.

DAY 5 | SACRED VALLEY: CHINCHERO, LIVING MUSEUM OF YUCAY, OLLANTAYTAMBO

In the morning, you are picked up from your hotel to visit the town of Chinchero, a traditional Cusco urban centre located at an elevated point with a beautiful view of the valley. The inhabitants of this area preserve the artisan traditions and the inherited knowledge of the Incas and display them in their clothes and customs. In Chinchero there are also archaeological remains and a beautiful seventeenth-century church, one of the first Catholic buildings in Peru.

Then, you are transferred to the Living Museum of Yucay, an Andean tradition interpretation centre with demonstrations of the production of textile work, adobe, pottery and silverware, following the techniques used by the ancestors. Also, residents of the museum include llamas, sheep and alpacas, and they can be fed!

Visit the town of Ollantaytambo upon your arrival – inhabited uninterruptedly since Inca times – and have a superior Andean gastronomy experience in a restaurant. Fell the true spirit of the Sacred Valley, transmitted in a cozy atmosphere! Later, climb the iconic fortress, built next to a mountain and then you are transferred back to your hotel.

*On Sundays, also visit the local market.

FAQs

Are permits required for the Salkantay Trek?

No specific permits are required for the Salkantay Trek itself, but a permit to enter Machu Picchu is needed if the trek concludes there. Most trekkers book through a tour operator who handles permits and logistics.

Can I do the Salkantay Trek independently?

While it is possible to trek independently, many opt for guided tours to ensure safety, navigation, and support. Guided tours also handle logistics such as permits, transportation, and meals.

What is the best time to do the Salkantay Trek?

The best time to trek is during the dry season, from May to September, when weather conditions are more stable. The trek can be done year-round, but conditions can be wet and challenging during the rainy season (October to April).

Do I need travel insurance?

Travel Insurance Travel insurance is compulsory in order to participate on any of our trips. When selecting a travel insurance policy please bear in mind that all clients must have medical coverage and that we require a minimum coverage of USD 200,000 for repatriation and emergency rescue. We strongly recommend that the policy also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects. If you have credit card insurance we require proof of purchase of the trip’s receipt of credit card statements with a credit card in your name. Contact your bank for details of their participating insurer, the level of coverage and emergency contact telephone number.

How difficult is the Salkantay Trek?

The trek is considered moderate to challenging due to the high altitude and varying terrain. Proper acclimatization and a reasonable level of fitness are recommended.

What should I bring on the Salkantay Trek?

Bring comfortable hiking boots, warm clothing (layers), a rain jacket, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a sleeping bag, a headlamp, and a reusable water bottle. Trekking poles can also be helpful.

Is the Salkantay Trek suitable for beginners?

The trek is suitable for those with a basic level of fitness and hiking experience. Beginners should prepare for the physical demands and high altitude by training and acclimatizing properly.

How can I prepare for the high altitude?

To prepare, spend a few days acclimatizing in Cusco before the trek, stay hydrated, avoid heavy meals before trekking, and consider taking altitude sickness medication if needed.
